The Systems Engineer is responsible for the integration, performance, and reliability of vehicle systems including wiring, sensors, data logging, telemetry, radios, and timing infrastructure. Using data analysis, testing, and continuous improvement, this role supports overall car performance throughout the race season.
Key Responsibilities
Car Wiring & Sensors
- Wire race cars in the shop prior to tests and events
- Maintain wiring systems, sensors, and electronic spares throughout the season
- Manage inventory of sensors, looms, connectors, and related hardware
- Support development, calibration, installation, and maintenance of all onboard sensors
- Troubleshoot and repair data logging systems and components
- Prepare and manage Pi system setups with engineering input
- Monitor sensor performance during all on-track activity and between sessions
- Maintain accurate electronic component mileage, calibration records, and data archives
- Source and recommend improvements or new components for logging systems
- Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot telemetry systems at tests and races
- Track system performance and recommend upgrades or improvements
- Perform repairs and manage telemetry-related hardware
- Install, program, maintain, and troubleshoot car and team radio systems
- Support radio needs for domestic and international events
- Manage radio inventory, charging, usage tracking, and helmet microphone installs
- Assemble and maintain timing stands at the track
- Ensure all networks, hardware, and data feeds are operational before each session
- Troubleshoot timing stand and network issues and coordinate with outside vendors if needed
- Collect and maintain race video and timing data for team and driver use
- Design, from concept to detail drawing, components necessary for data logging system.
- Track projects, job costs, and time reporting accurately
- Submit purchase requisitions with proper approvals
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
- Uphold safety-first practices and report any hazards or incidents
- Support additional duties as needed to assist team operations
Qualifications & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of IndyCar electronics, data logging, and telemetry systems
- Working knowledge of race car electrical systems and sensor technology
- Familiarity with IndyCar rules and regulations (or ability to develop quickly)
- Computer and CAD literacy
- Understanding of manufacturing techniques, materials, and race car practices
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- This position travels to all IndyCar tests and race events.
