Job Description

Brackley, UK

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars with the aim of fighting for world championships each and every year.

Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.

Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.

About the Role:

Before an F1 car reaches the track it has already completed thousands of virtual laps on the dyno, pushed to the limit in a meticulously simulated racing environment. Before a driver fastens their belts they have spent hours in motion, immersed in a digital world where every aspect of car and driver performance is analysed in detail. Behind the scenes, cutting-edge technology powers this relentless pursuit of performance, designed and developed by world-class engineers. Could you be one of them?

As a Control Systems Engineer, you’ll contribute directly to the performance of our test facilities by developing real-time software for testbeds, driver-in-the-loop simulators, and hardware-in-the-loop systems. You’ll join a highly collaborative team, working at the intersection of control systems, embedded software, and simulation. Building on your experience, you’ll take ownership of tasks, contribute to system architecture, and help shape the tools and processes that keep us at the cutting edge.

Key Accountabilities:

As a Control Systems Engineer, you will:

  • Design, implement, and maintain real-time control system software using MATLAB and Simulink for our hardware-in-the-loop platforms, powertrain testbeds, and driver-in-the-loop simulators
  • Enhance and automate software development processes, including build systems, validation, and deployment workflows, to improve efficiency and reliability
  • Develop tools and analysis scripts to streamline testing, automate repetitive tasks, and improve data analysis
  • Collaborate with operational teams, providing documentation, diagnostics, and hands-on technical support to quickly diagnose and resolve issues
  • Drive technical improvements through innovation, applying advanced software engineering, modelling and simulation technologies to real-world engineering challenges
  • Share knowledge and contribute to best practices within the team, while continuing to grow your expertise through mentorship and hands-on experience

What You'll Bring:

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has previous years of experience in a control systems, automotive, simulation, or real-time embedded software development role
  • Holds a degree in a STEM discipline (e.g., Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Applied Mathematics)
  • Understands vehicle dynamics, control theory, and mechanical systems
  • Has practical experience with model-based design using MATLAB/Simulink
  • Is familiar with hardware-in-the-loop systems and rapid control prototyping platforms (e.g. dSPACE SCALEXIO, Speedgoat)
  • Has experience with automotive communication protocols such as CAN bus
  • Is passionate about high-performance engineering and enjoys solving technical challenges using data and software
  • Has an interest or background in powertrain testing and controls
  • Enjoys writing efficient, maintainable code and continuously improving tools and workflows
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, high-performance environment where collaboration and initiative are key

What We Offer:

Our riverside campus is powered by 100% renewably sourced energy and includes an on-site gym, exercise studio, subsidised restaurant, and on-site parking with EV chargers.

We also offer a competitive benefits package including a generous bonus scheme, Mercedes car lease scheme, private medical cover, life assurance, and 25 days’ holiday. We pride ourselves on our family-friendly culture and team-wide focus on well-being.

Why Join Us:

At the core of our performance is our people. Every member of our team plays a part in our success, both on and off the track. We foster a high-performance, innovative culture where collaboration, respect and excellence are expected and celebrated.

Through our Accelerate 25 programme, we’re committed to building a more diverse and inclusive team—because we believe the best teams are those that reflect the world around them.

Your Application:

We will ask you to complete a questionnaire as well as submitting a cover letter and CV. Please upload your cover letter and CV as one single PDF file.
